Football heritage

The town has a rich footballing history and home to Wigan Athletic. Founded in 1932 the club has played in the lower leagues during the 20th century but rose to prominence at the turn of the millennium by reaching the promised land of the Premier League in 2005.

The club’s sharp rise to the top culminated in 2013 when a last-minute winner saw them land their first major trophy in the form of the FA Cup at Wembley.

Leigh, which in recent years has been the home of Manchester United women, who play at Leigh Sports Village.

Local legacy

UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 will provide a springboard for the continued growth of women’s and girls’ football in England. In Wigan & Leigh the legacy programme aims to:

  • Increase the number of schools delivering girls’ football within – and beyond – the curriculum through Girls’ Football School Partnerships.
  • Launch clear and accessible opportunities and programmes for women and girls to play recreational football where and how they wish.
  • Transform the number of coaches and referees supporting women’s and girls’ football across the borough.

All leading to:

  • 11,500 more women and girls regularly playing football in schools and clubs by 2024.
  • 40 FA-qualified female referees and 40 female coaches by 2024.
  • Increase in numbers of Wildcats providers from four to 15 by 2024.
